The third report under the Code of Practice on Disinformation has been released

Online platforms are intensifying their efforts to maintain election integrity, as demonstrated by the release of the third set of reports under the Code of Practice on Disinformation. This batch, involving major platforms such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok, focuses on measures to combat disinformation ahead of the upcoming European elections in June. The reports, accessible via the Transparency Centre, detail existing and planned actions by signatories to address challenges, including those posed by generative AI. Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová, praised the Code’s role as a collaborative tool, urging platforms to enhance their measures against foreign information manipulation during elections.

Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, underscored the need for platforms to use all available tools, such as content moderation and labeling deepfakes, to foster a fair information environment for voters. The Commission also provided DSA electoral guidelines to guide platforms in translating obligations into concrete actions, thereby protecting democratic foundations. Platform strategies mentioned in the reports include clearly labeling digitally altered content, working with fact-checking organizations, promoting reliable information sources, and running media literacy campaigns. Previous reports were released in February and September 2023, with the next set expected in fall 2024.

The Commission aims to quickly recognize the Code of Practice as a Code of Conduct under the Digital Services Act. Moreover, it has adopted the first DSA guidelines on elections for designated very large online platforms and search engines, reinforcing its dedication to maintaining election integrity in the digital realm.
