MediaLaws, DICOPO – Digital Constitutionalism & Policy, The Digital Constitutionalist research groups organised the second Online Roundtable on “AI and Data Regulation: Between Convergence and Novel Challenges”.

On July 12, 2024, the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) was officially published in the EU’s Official Journal, marking the introduction of the first comprehensive, overarching legal framework for regulating AI systems across the EU. The Act takes effect in all 27 EU Member States on August 1, 2024, with most of its provisions becoming enforceable starting August 2, 2026.

In this session, our highly esteemed speakers explored the intersection of AI and data governance, focusing on how the GDPR aligns with or diverges from the objectives of the EU AI Act. They discussed the role of ex-ante governance and risk management frameworks in AI regulation while also addressing the evolving responsibilities and challenges data protection authorities face as they take on greater roles in AI oversight.
