The European Commission unveiled “A Comprehensive EU Toolbox for Safe and Sustainable E-Commerce” in an effort to counter threats from low-value imports coming from non-EU online stores. Since 70% of consumer expenditure in the EU is now carried out via e-commerce, the measure addresses product safety, fair competition, and the environment. Proposals include ending duty-free allowances for low-value parcels, increasing inspections, employing AI-powered tools for detecting non-compliant products, and promoting sustainability through new regulations like the Digital Product Passport. Member States are urged to work together in their take-up, with a review within one year to observe how effective they are.
