Fostering responsible research: the European Commission and stakeholders issue Generative AI guidelines
In a collaborative initiative, the European Commission and representatives from the European Research Area have introduced comprehensive guidelines to promote the responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence within the research sector. These guidelines aim to provide a framework for the European research community to effectively leverage generative AI while recognizing its limitations, aligning with the Commission’s focus on fostering AI innovation for scientific advancement and societal benefit.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age, and Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, emphasized the importance of transparency and responsible deployment of generative AI tools. The guidelines are centered on research integrity, providing researchers and institutions with clear directions on using generative AI responsibly. They will undergo regular updates based on feedback from the scientific community, ensuring adaptability to evolving AI technologies. This collaborative effort aims to empower researchers to ethically integrate generative AI into their work, thereby contributing to a responsible and trustworthy European research ecosystem.
