Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is suing the EU Commission over being labeled a “Very Large Online Platform” under the Digital Markets Act. This VLOP label means Meta has to follow stricter rules to promote competition. Meta argues they shouldn’t be a VLOP, likely because the EU included some of their services in a category the company disagrees with. The outcome of this lawsuit could affect how the DMA is enforced. If Meta wins, the EU might need to change how it picks VLOPs. If Meta loses, the EU’s control over VLOPs is strengthened. This fight shows how hard it is to regulate big tech companies and the legal issues that can come up with new regulations.
