The White House takes a stand on AI with an Executive Order on Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence
Prior to the Bletchley Declaration, signed in the global AI safety Summit held in London on the 1-2 November, President Biden issued an Executive Order to limit and control the current phases of AI development in the United States. The executive order’s security mandates on AI providers have been ruled by President Biden under the Defense Production Act. This act is a war-time tool to be deployed at “the most urgent moments”, as President Biden recalls.
First, the order requires that service providers test their AI systems to ensure they cannot be used to produce biological or nuclear weapons, and that they report the identity and number of foreign customers. These findings are reported directly, albeit privately, to the US Government.
The executive order also recommends the “watermarking” of AI-developed photos, videos and audio, in order to fight deep fakes and prevent disinformation.
